Refugee camp overlooks the damaged city of San Francisco. This camp might be on Mission Dolores Park. Note the Ladies and Mens facilities. In the distance are domes of the City Hall (left) and the Call Building (right). On April 18, 1906 at 5:15 AM a quake of 8.25 on the Richter scale hit San Francisco. Greater destruction came from the fires afterwards. The city burned for three days. The combination destroyed 490 city blocks and 25,000 buildings, leaving 250,000 homeless and killing between 450 and 700. Estimated damages, over $350 million

The Army Medical Center is preparing a pneumonia vaccine for the first mass scale inoculation ever attempted in the battle against the disease. Volunteers from the CCC will be the human guinea pigs in the experiment. The vaccine, which is 10 times as costly as gold, is being made for distribution this fall to all CCC enrollees who desire inoculations, officers expect to have enough vaccine to safeguard 300,000 individuals. Captain John R. Wood, of the Army Medical Center is shown dissolving the active ingredients in strong hydrochloric acid in the first step of manufacture[...]

Production of butylene glycol. P. Burke Jacobs checks the milling of corn for which new industrial uses are sought at the Northern Regional Research Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Peoria, Illinois. A method for converting corn and other grains into butylene glycol by the action of bacteria, developed in the laboratory, has proven effective on a semi-commercial scale in the pilot plant. This chemical can be used in making anti-freeze for automobiles and in the production of commercial solvents for various manufacturing purposes. Department scientists have succeeded on a laboratory scale in turning butylene glycol into butadiene, from which synthetic rubber can be made. Now they are trying to do it on a semi-commercial scale

In the Space Station Processing Facility, workers help guide the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Leonardo as it moves toward the weight and balance scale. The Italian-built MPLM is one of three such pressurized modules that will serve as the International Space Station's "moving vans," carrying laboratory racks filled with equipment, experiments and supplies to and from the station aboard the Space Shuttle. The cylindrical module is approximately 21 feet long and 15 feet in diameter, weighing almost 4.1 metric tons. It can carry up to 9.1 metric tons of cargo packed into 16 standard space station equipment racks. The Leonardo will be launched on mission STS-102 March 8. On that flight, Leonardo will be filled with equipment and supplies to outfit the U.S. laboratory module, to be carried to the ISS on the Feb. 7 launch of STS-98 KSC-01pp0253

P-21742 BW Range: 6 million kilometers (3.72 million miles) This Voyager 2 image shows the region of Jupiter extending from the equator to the southern polar latitudes in the neighborhood of the Great Red Spot. A white oval, different from the one observed in a similiar position at the time of the Voyager 1 encounter, is situated south of the Great Red Spot. The region of white clouds now extends from east of the red spot and around its northern boundary, preventing small cloud vortices from circling the feature. The disturbed region west of the red spot has also changed since the equivalent Voyager 1 image. It shows more small scale structure and cloud vortices being formed out of the wave structures. This third in a series of forums is part of an ongoing initiative to identify, showcase and support innovative approaches to sustainability challenges. LAUNCH allows NASA to propel innovative solutions that help those outside the agency make the connection between our lives on Earth and how we live and work in space. Through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)'s involvement, LAUNCH places a special emphasis on accelerating innovations poised for large scale impact in improving the lives of people in the developing world. During the forum, 10 international participants will showcase new innovations that could address energy problems on Earth and in space. NASA, USAID, Nike Inc., and the U.S. Department of State are LAUNCH founding partners. The partners all contributed to planning the forum, selecting innovators and recruiting other event participants. Photo credit: NASA/Kim Shiflett KSC-2011-7760

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, student engineers track a small rocket after liftoff as part of the agency's Rocket University program. As part of Rocket University, the engineers are given an opportunity to work a fast-track project to develop skills in developing spacecraft systems of the future. As NASA plans for future spaceflight programs to low-Earth orbit and beyond, teams of engineers at Kennedy are gaining experience in designing and flying launch vehicle systems on a small scale. Four teams of five to eight members from Kennedy are designing rockets complete with avionics and recovery systems. Launch operations require coordination with federal agencies, just as they would with rockets launched in support of a NASA mission. Photo credit: NASA/Jim Grossmann KSC-2013-4349
