Museum curator Harold D. "Buck" Rigg (right) and his brother Art Rigg, who built the 1/6th scale model of a Douglas O-6 Observation aircraft and donated it to the Eighth Air Force Museum, Barksdale Air Force Base (AFB), Louisiana (LA), in memory of their father, Lieutenant Colonel (LCOL) H.M. "Hal" Rigg. This is the type of aircraft that Lieutenant (LT) Eugene Hoy Barksdale, namesake of Barksdale AFB, flew on Aug 11, 1926 over McCook Field, Dayton Ohio (OH) testing the airplane for spin characteristics, and attempted to bailout when he could not recover from a flat spin. His parachute became entangled in the wing's brace wires and fell to his death. Barksdale AFB celebrated its 70th...

New testing is underway in the Aero-Acoustic Propulsion Laboratory (AAPL) at NASA's Glenn Research Center. The research focuses on a model called the Highly Variable Cycle Exhaust System -- a 0.17 scale model of an exhaust system that will operate at subsonic, transonic and supersonic exhaust speeds in a future supersonic business jet. The model features ejector doors used at different angles. Researchers are investigating the impact of these ejectors on the resulting acoustic radiation. Here, Steven Sedensky, a mechanical engineer with Jacobs Sverdrup, takes measurements of the ejector door positions. GRC-2010-C-00635

HAMPTON, Va. – NASA technician Ricky Hall works inside the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel at NASA's Langley Research Center in Virginia to affix grains of sand to a precise scale model of the Dream Chaser spacecraft. Sierra Nevada Corporation is developing the Dream Chaser in partnership with NASA's Commercial Crew Program.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- In the Space Station Processing Facility, Mission STS-120 Pilot George Zamka (left) and Commander Pam Melroy stand in front of the Node 2 module with it's new name, Harmony, unveiled, as Russ Romanella, director of International Space Station and Spacecraft Processing presides over the ceremony. The name, Harmony, was chosen from an academic competition involving thousands of students in kindergarten through high school. The Node 2 Challenge required students to learn about the International Space Station, build a scale model of the module, and write an essay explaining their proposed name. This will be the first U.S. piece of the space station named by someone other than a NASA official. Node 2 is a pressurized module that will act as a connecting port and passageway to additional international science labs and supply spacecraft. It also will be a work platform for the station's robotic arm. The module is scheduled to fly on mission STS-120 aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis targeted for later this year.
