Ceremonies - Washington - President Wilson reviews Confederate Veterans. Under the Stars and Stripes they marched on June 7, 1917. Heroes who marched and fought with the Gray, men who answered the Southland's call rallied under Old Glory in a great parade in Washington, D.C. Five thousand United Confederate veterans and others marched in the parade, with the Stars and Stripes fluttering above the stars and bars still reverend but given way to a greater and mightier union. The veterans of the South were escorted by a thin line of Union veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic. Photo shows Virginia Military Institute cadets marching in the parade

Standing at the left is John James Byrne, member of the American Red Cross Mission to Italy, Major Byrne is a lawyer of national reputation and Vice President of the State Bar Association of N.Y. retired from his profession to take up Red Cross work in Italy. Lt. Col. Robert J. Perkins (right) was regent of the University of the state of New York, as well as President of one of the largest industrial organizations in the U.s, Director of one of New York's greatest banks and President of the Neurological Institute. At the outbreak of the war he presented his yacht to the Government and became Red Cross Commissioner to Italy. Col. Apolloni, (center) is head of the Comitate Civili of Rome.
