Planes in flight. The P-40 single-engine fighter plane--which the British have used in its various models as the "Tomahawk," "Kittyhawk" and "Warhawk"--is a fast pursuit ship in the 400-mile-per-hour class. It has an approximate service ceiling of 30,000 feet and a range of about 900 miles. Carrying various combinations of light and heavy caliber guns, it has performed notably with the RAF (Royal Air Force) in England and Africa, with the AVG (American Volunteer Group--Flying Tigers) in China and. with the AAF (Army Air Forces) in the South Pacific

America's youth builds and flies model planes on miniature flying fields. Two American boys give their giant model plane a running start at Kelly Field in the city of San Antonio in the southwestern U.S. state of Texas where members of the Gas Model Club do their weekly flying. The plane, which weighs eleven pounds, has a thirteen feet (3.9 meters) wing spread, and a wing area of twenty-four square feet (2.2 square meters) The plane will not take off by itself, but with a running start flies very successfully. When the U.S. government in 1941 called on model plane builders to turn out 800,000 scale model airplanes for use by the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army, and civilian defense groups to train military and civilian personnel to recognize hostile and friendly aircraft, it was estimated that there were nearly three million American youths actively interested in aero-modeling. These young model builders put their experience to practical use by turning out models of fighters, scouts, fighter bombers, bombers, torpedo carriers, and commercial planes of the United Nations and of the enemy

War ration book no. 3. This new ration book, replacement for present books when their stamps are used up, will be distributed during the early summer. It contains four pages of "point" stamps, similar to the point stamps in war ration book 2, though slightly different in design and printed in brown ink. It also contains four pages of "unit" stamps for the type of rationing now used for sugar, coffee, and shoes. Each page of fourty-eight stamps bears the design of a different war machine, including guns, tanks, aircraft carriers and planes. One of each of these stamps is reproduced separately below the picture of the book. Important note: Actual dimensions of the point ration stamps are 7/8 inch x 1 inch, while the unit stamps are 7/16 inch x 1 inch. The U.S. Secret Service requests that ration stamps not be reproduced in actual size, but less than 3/4 or over 1 1/2 times. Also, stamps should not be reproduced in color. This photograph, if reproduced, same size, meets these requirements

Air raid protection--what NOT to do when alarm sounds. DON'T look out the windows. Johnnie doesn't mean to be a fifth columnist, but in looking out and attempting to see the planes he's flashing a swell signal just the same; in addition this is a dangerous place for him to be because of flying glass splinters which might well result from the concussion caused by a bomb falling nearby. Looking out the window is fruitless also because there is nothing one can see during a blackout
