KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - A tractor-trailer arrives at the Crawler Transporter (CT) area with a new shipment of crawler shoes.  The new shoes were manufactured by ME Global in Duluth, Minn.  The CT transports the Mobile Launcher Platform, with the assembled Space Shuttle aboard, between the refurbishment area, the VAB and Launch Complex Pads 39A and 39B.  The crawlers have 456 shoes, 57 per belt (8 belts in all).  Each shoe weighs 2,200 pounds.  The original shoes were manufactured for the Apollo Program.  Cracks appeared in the shoes in recent years spurring a need for replacement.  The new manufacturer, in Duluth, Minn., has improved the design for Return to Flight and use through the balance of the Space Shuttle Program. KSC-04pd2134

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -  On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the crawler transporter used for moving space shuttles to the NASA Kennedy Space Center’s launch pads, former crawler engineer Bill Clemens talks to the media and invited guests (behind him) Rick Drollinger (blue shirt), whose father Richard was director of engineering at Marion Power Shovel Co. in Ohio where the crawlers were initially built in 1965; Philip Koehring Jr. (on right), whose father was project manager at Marion; and Koehring’s sons Doug and John.  Media representatives and invited guests had the opportunity to tour one of NASA's two crawlers. This included the driver cab and engine room.  Guests included current drivers and operators, as well as drivers from the Apollo Program.  In January 1966, the crawler completed its first successful move with a 10.6-million-pound launch umbilical tower. It moved three-quarters of a mile in about nine hours. Media representatives and invited guests had the opportunity to tour one of NASA's two crawlers. This included the driver cab and engine room.  Guests included current drivers and operators, as well as drivers from the Apollo Program. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA.  -- During the second stage of a simulated emergency, known as Mode 4, a triage area set up at Helipad 8, located near the fire station between Launch Pads 39A and 39B, is busy as rescue workers monitor the "injured."  KSC personnel portrayed the astronauts.  The participants were helped off the pad and taken to the triage site.  The "injured" worker may be airlifted to participating area hospitals.  The KSC rescue teams are practicing emergency procedures in the unlikely scenario of a mishap on the pad during a launch sequence. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. –– Space shuttle Atlantis (left) and space shuttle Endeavour are seen on Launch Pads 39A and 39B, respectively, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This is probably the final time two shuttles will be on launch pads at the same time with the space shuttle fleet set for retirement in 2010.  Surrounding pad 39B are the lightning towers erected for NASA's Constellation Program, which will use the pad for Ares rocket launches.  Endeavour will be prepared on the pad for liftoff in the unlikely event that a rescue mission is necessary following space shuttle Atlantis' launch on the STS-125 mission to service NASA's  Hubble Space Telescope. After Atlantis is cleared to land, Endeavour will move to Launch Pad 39A for its upcoming STS-127 mission to the International Space Station, targeted to launch June 13. The booster was recovered by the solid rocket booster recovery ship Freedom Star after it splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean following its flight test.    Liftoff of the 6-minute flight test was at 11:30 a.m. EDT Oct. 28. This was the first launch from Kennedy's pads of a vehicle other than the space shuttle since the Apollo Program's Saturn rockets were retired. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- On Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, technicians take temporary step pads into the intertank of space shuttle Discovery's external fuel tank. The intertank is unpressurized and holds most of the tank's electrical components. It sits between the liquid hydrogen tank and liquid oxygen tank. Technicians will be working inside the intertank to further analyze two cracks that were found on the tank’s metal exterior. The foam cracked during initial loading operations for space shuttle Discovery’s launch attempt on Nov. 5. The cracks are on one of the stringers, which are the composite aluminum ribs located vertically on the intertank area. The baskets will be removed and put in storage.    The system of seven slidewire baskets at launch pads A and B provided an escape route for personnel inside the orbiter or on the orbiter access arm. The baskets are suspended from slidewires that extend from the pad’s Fixed Service Structure to a landing zone 1,200 feet to the west. Each basket could hold up to three people. A braking system catch net and drag chain slowed and then halted the baskets sliding down the wire approximately 55 miles per hour in about half a minute. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - In the Crawler Transporter (CT) area, a worker offloads some of the new crawler shoes that arrived.  In the background is one of the two CTs. The new shoes were manufactured by ME Global in Duluth, Minn.  The CT transports the Mobile Launcher Platform, with the assembled Space Shuttle aboard, between the refurbishment area, the VAB and Launch Complex Pads 39A and 39B.  The crawlers have 456 shoes, 57 per belt (8 belts in all).  Each shoe weighs 2,200 pounds.  The original shoes were manufactured for the Apollo Program.  Cracks appeared in the shoes in recent years spurring a need for replacement.  The new manufacturer, in Duluth, Minn., has improved the design for Return to Flight and use through the balance of the Space Shuttle Program. KSC-04pd2136

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -  Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP) number 3 and a set of twin solid rocket boosters bolted to it, atop the crawler-transporter, crawl to the intersection in the crawlerway in support of the second engineering analysis vibration test on the crawler and MLP.  In the background are Launch Pads 39A (right) and 39B (left).  The crawler is moving at various speeds up to 1 mph in an effort to achieve vibration data gathering goals as it leaves the VAB, travels toward Launch Pad 39A and then returns.  The boosters are braced at the top for stability.  The primary purpose of these rollout tests is to gather data to develop future maintenance requirements on the transport equipment and the flight hardware. Various parts of the MLP and crawler transporter have been instrumented with vibration data collection equipment.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -  In the Space Station Processing Facility, modules and equipment are being covered in plastic in preparation for the expected impact of Hurricane Frances on Saturday.  KSC workers also have powered down the Space Shuttle orbiters, closed their payload bay doors and stowed the landing gear.  They are also taking precautions against flooding by moving spacecraft hardware off the ground and sandbagging facilities. The SSPF can withstand sustained winds of 110 mph and wind gusts up to 132 mph.  The Orbiter Processing Facility is constructed of concrete and steel and was designed to withstand winds of 105 mph.  The Vehicle Assembly Building is constructed of concrete and steel and was designed to withstand winds of 125 mph. Other payload and flight hardware support facilities can endure winds of 110 mph.  Launch pads and the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility can withstand 125-mph winds. KSC-04pd1716

O’Keefe is visiting KSC to survey the damage sustained by KSC facilities from Hurricane Frances over Labor Day weekend. The Vehicle Assembly Building, Thermal Protection System Facility, and Processing Control Center all received significant damage from the storm.  Additionally, the Operations and Checkout Building, Vertical Processing Facility, Hangar AE, Hangar S and Hangar AF Small Parts Facility each received substantial damage. The TPSF, which creates the TPS tiles, blankets and all the internal thermal control systems for the Space Shuttles, is almost totally unserviceable at this time after losing approximately 35 percent of its roof during Hurricane Frances, which blew across Central Florida Sept. 4-5.  Readdy and NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe are visiting KSC to survey the damage sustained by KSC facilities from the hurricane.  The Labor Day storm also caused significant damage to the Vehicle Assembly Building and Processing Control Center.  Additionally, the Operations and Checkout Building, Vertical Processing Facility, Hangar AE, Hangar S and Hangar AF Small Parts Facility each received substantial damage. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA.  -- During the second stage of a simulated emergency, known as Mode 4,  a KSC rescue team helps a worker portraying an "injured" astronaut at a triage area set up at Helipad 8, located near the fire station between Launch Pads 39A and 39B.  The emergency exercise began on Launch Pad 39A. The participants were helped off the pad and taken to the triage site.  The "injured" worker may be airlifted to participating area hospitals.  The KSC rescue teams are practicing emergency procedures in the unlikely scenario of a mishap on the pad during a launch sequence. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. --  A gopher tortoise searches for food at the edge of a road near Launch Pad 39A.  Their primary food sources are low-growing grasses and herbs, with their favorite foods being gopher apple and saw palmetto berries. They will eat the pads, fruits, and flowers of prickly pear cactus as well.  They will occasionally also eat bones from dead animals, presumably to get calcium. The gopher tortoise is a cold-blooded reptile that averages 10 inches in length and 9 pounds in weight.  Wild tortoises may live from 40 - 60 years, while tortoises in captivity can live more than 100 years. Their range extends from southeastern Louisiana to southeastern South Carolina and throughout all 67 counties in Florida. The gopher tortoise is federally protected as a threatened species except in Florida, where it is listed as a Species of Special Concern by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Lands surrounding the Kennedy Space Center are part of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.  Approximately one half of the Refuge's 140,000 acres consists of brackish estuaries and marshes. This is the first time since the Apollo Program's Saturn rockets were retired that a vehicle other than the space shuttle has occupied the pad.  Modifications to the pad to support the Ares I-X included the removal of shuttle unique subsystems, such as the orbiter access arm and a section of the gaseous oxygen vent arm, and the installation of three 600-foot lightning towers, access platforms, environmental control systems and a vehicle stabilization system.  Part of the Constellation Program, the Ares I-X is the test vehicle for the Ares I.  The Ares I-X flight test is set for Oct. 27. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- This is a version of space shuttle Atlantis' orbiter tribute, or OV-104, which hangs in Firing Room 4 of the Launch Control Center at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. In 2011, the tribute was updated to reflect the addition of one more Atlantis flight -- STS-135 -- which will be the 33rd flight of Atlantis, the 37th shuttle mission to the space station, and the 135th and final mission of NASA's Space Shuttle Program. In the lower-left corner, it features Atlantis soaring above Earth and threaded through the design are the mission patches for each of Atlantis’ flights. Atlantis' accomplishments include seven missions to the Russian space station Mir and several assembly, construction and resupply missions to the International Space Station. Atlantis also flew the last Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission on STS-125. In the tribute, the planet Venus represents the Magellan probe being deployed during STS-30, and Jupiter represents the Galileo probe being deployed during STS-34. The inset photos illustrate various aspects of shuttle processing as well as significant achievements, such as the glass cockpit and the first shuttle docking with Mir during STS-71. The inset photo in the upper-left corner shows a rainbow over Atlantis on Launch Pad 39A and shuttle Endeavour on Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy. Endeavour was the assigned vehicle had Atlantis’ STS-125 mission needed rescue, and this was the last time both launch pads were occupied at the same time. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Finishing touches adorn the second-floor lobby of the Propellants North Administrative and Maintenance Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. At right, are recycled firing room windows that are set at the same angle and orientation as they were in Kennedy's Launch Control Center, looking out toward Launch Pads 39A and B. The environmentally friendly facility is slated to be NASA's second Platinum-rated by the U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) certification system. It will be the space agency's first net-zero facility, which means it will produce enough energy onsite from renewable sources to offset what it requires to operate.            The facility consists of a two-story administrative building to house managers, mechanics and technicians who fuel spacecraft at Kennedy, and a single-story shop to store cryogenic fuel transfer equipment. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – STS-135 Commander Chris Ferguson settles in the driver's seat of NASA’s silver Astrovan. Since 1984, the Astrovan, a modified Airstream motor home, has carried shuttle crew members to the launch pads. Ferguson, along with Pilot Doug Hurley and Mission Specialist Sandra Magnus, was at the center for the traditional post-flight crew return presentation.     STS-135 Mission Specialist Rex Walheim was unable to attend the Kennedy event. In July 2011, Atlantis and its crew delivered to the International Space Station the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module packed with more than 9,400 pounds of spare parts, equipment and supplies that will sustain station operations for the next year. STS-135 was the 33rd and final flight for Atlantis and the final mission of the Space Shuttle Program.
