A track for an Army halftrac car nears completion as curing plates nuts are removed with an air pressure wrench on the trimming rack of a Midwest rubber plant. Goodrich, Akron, Ohio
Conversion. Food machinery plant. This turret lathe was purchased second-hand from a nearby shoe factory to speed production on war subcontracts held by a New England plant which formerly turned out cube steak machinery. Edwin Becker is checking on a retooling job in progress which will eventually fit the new lathe to thread three-and-a-quarter-inch hexagonal nuts. Becker is checking the measurements of the tool hole in the turret with those of the specially-built tap which will do the threading. Cube Steak Machine Company, Boston, Massachusetts
Conversion. Food machinery plant. John J. Morris used to cut steel disc covers with his universal milling machine. These disc covers were part of the cube steak machines which are the normal products of the New England plant where he is employed. Today, however, Morris uses the same machine, tooled over for war subcontract work, for the cutting of large hexagonal nuts for a government arsenal. For cube steak machinery there was only one milling wheel, instead of the two shown above. "Hexing a nut" is a very simple job with a machine designed to shape the nut in a single operation, but such a machine is not available and time is short. Morris, therefore, shifts the round steel stock three times, cutting two sides at a time. Cube Steak Machine Company, Boston, Massachusetts
Production. Airplane manufacture, general. These containers hold nuts, bolts, rivets and parts that go into assemblies at the Inglewood, California, plant of North American Aviation. Employees are urged to conserve on all items. This plant produces the battle-tested B-25 ("Billy Mitchell") bomber, used in General Doolittle's raid on Tokyo, and the P-51 ("Mustang") fighter plane, which was first brought into prominence by the British raid on Dieppe
Conversion. Food machinery plant. Operator of this universal milling machine is John J. Morris shown here cutting steel disc covers for his company's normal product--cube steak machines. Today, Morris used the same machine adapted to war subcontract work- -the cutting of large hexagonal nuts for a government arsenal. "Hexing a nut" is a very simple job with a machine designed to shape the entire piece in one operation, but such a machine is not available and time is short. Morris, therefore, shifts the round piece of steel stock three times, cutting two sides in each operation. Cube Steak Machine Company, Boston, Massachusetts

Conversion. Toy factory. These two girls, Stephanie Cewe and Ann Manemeit, have turned their skill from peacetime production of toy trains to the assembling of parachute flare casings for the armies of democracy. Along with other workers in this Eastern plant, they have turned their skill to the vital needs of the day, and in many cases have seen to it that the machinery they used to use does Uncle Sam's most important work today. Stephanie, left, is assembling toy locomotives, driving screws and nuts with an electric screwdriver, while Ann is at her peacetime job assembling locomotive housings to their chassis. Today both girls are working with electric screwdrivers, assembling parachute flare casings. A. C. Gilbert Company, New Haven, Connecticut

Production. B-25 bombers. Nuts and bolts are checked on a Magnaflux machine before they are used in the assembly of B-25 bombers in a Western aircraft plant. General Doolittle has called the ship the best military plane in existence. With plenty of speed, a 1700-mile cruising range and a ceiling of 25,000 feet, it has performed brilliantly as a medium bomber and as an escort plane. Fairfax bomber plant, Kansas City
Conversion. Food machinery plant. In the background is a cube steak machine, normal product of a New England plant now doing work on various war subcontracts. In the foreground are twenty-four items typical of those this plant has been doing to turn out for the war effort after certain retooling and conversion work had been done on its machinery. These changes are necessarily simple, for this company is still filling army and navy orders for the cube steak machine. Including among the twenty-four items are aluminum crankcases, steel spouts for anti-tank guns, bronze flanges, nuts and various screw machine parts. Cube Steak Machines Company, Boston, Massachusetts
Production. Subchasers. Galvanizing nuts and bolts for use on subchasers under construction in a Southern shipyard. This man used to run a printing shop and tourist camp. Now, as a galvanizer and also a welder, he has helped the shipyard earn the coveted Navy "E"
Production. BT-13A ("Valiant") basic trainers. Conservation of materials at Vultee's Downey, California plant. Women sort bolts, nuts, rivets, etc. At the Downey plant is made the BT-13A ("Valiant") basic trainer--a fast, sturdy ship powered by a Pratt and Whitney Wasp engine

The Eastern gray squirrel is found in wooded, suburban, and urban areas statewide. It nests in tree hollows or leaf nests in treetops. Food plants include cypress, buckeyes, elms, grapes, tulip trees, mulberries, and tupelo. It breeds in late winter or early spring and again in late spring or summer, bearing two to six young. The eastern gray squirrel chatters when disturbed. The 92,000-acre wildlife refuge is a habitat for more than 310 species of birds, 25 mammals, 117 fishes and 65 amphibians and reptiles KSC-99pc0137
