Uncle Sam's monetary brains. Washington, D.C., Jan. 7. The government's experts on money matters met with Senate and House leaders today to discuss legislation to be submitted to the 75th session of Congress. A discussion was made at the conference to extend the life of important federal monetary lending agencies, and also, to move in giving the President authority to discontinue the R.F.C. at anytime the conditions warrant. In the photograph, left to right: Jesse Jones, Chairman of the Treasury; Senator Pat Harrison, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee; and Marriner Eccles, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board

Defense housing, Erie, Pennsylvania. The entire framework, including sections for doors and windows, is fabricated horizontally. The crew working here will later move to another site and repeat the procedure. This circulation of crews who are experienced in one type of construction adds to the speed with which defense homes are being built. Two crews of forty men each are used to raise the stud frames of a four-unit defense home. On the project shown here, one crew started the framework at 8:30am, fabricating it horizontally, and finished it at noon. The other crew moved in shortly after, erected the stud frame, ends, and floor joists, and finished the entire framework by 4:30pm the same day

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Space shuttle Endeavour is ready for the rollover from Orbiter Processing Facility 2 to the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Fla. The first motion of the shuttle out of its hangar was at 6:56 a.m. EDT. In the VAB, Endeavour will be lifted into High Bay 1 and mated to the external fuel tank and solid rocket boosters already installed on the mobile launcher platform. Endeavour is scheduled to roll out to Launch Pad 39B in about a week. Endeavour will be prepared on the pad for liftoff in the unlikely event that a rescue mission is necessary following space shuttle Atlantis' launch on the STS-125 mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope. After Atlantis is cleared to land, Endeavour will move to Launch Pad 39A for its upcoming STS-127 mission to the International Space Station, targeted to launch in mid-June. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Bathed in bright xenon lights, space shuttle Discovery makes its nighttime trek, known as "rollout," from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It will take the shuttle, attached to its external fuel tank, twin solid rocket boosters and mobile launcher platform, about six hours to complete the move atop a crawler-transporter. Rollout sets the stage for Discovery's STS-133 crew to practice countdown and launch procedures during the Terminal Countdown Demonstration Test in mid-October. Targeted to liftoff Nov. 1, Discovery will take the Permanent Multipurpose Module (PMM) packed with supplies and critical spare parts, as well as Robonaut 2 (R2) to the International Space Station. P-34630 Range: 10.5 million kilometers (6.5 million miles) This cylindrical projection view of Neptune uses five narrow-angle images equally spaced around the planet. They were taken by Voyager 2 over the course of a Neptunian day, an interval of about 18 hours. Latitude lines are horizontal in the image, and range from 80 degrees south to 30 degrees north of the equator. Near the center, the Great Dark Spot leaves a disturbed wave-like pattern that stretches around Neptune. Features further south move eastward at speeds up to 400 mph relative to the Great Dark Spot. The features are storms--moving cloud systems that persist for months or longer. The weather forecast for Neptune is therefore continued high winds and cold with little change in temperature. ARC-1989-A89-7040
