KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA.  - This photo shows the size of the sensors being placed on the wing leading edge of orbiter Discovery.  In her hand, United Space Alliance technician Lisa Campbell holds an accelerometer (left), which will eventually be installed on a mounting nut.  The sensors are part of the Wing Leading Edge Impact Detection System, a new safety measure added for all future Space Shuttle missions. The system also includes accelerometers that monitor the orbiter's wings for debris impacts during launch and while in orbit. There are 22 temperature sensors and 66 accelerometers on each wing. Sensor data will flow from the wing to the crew compartment, where it will be transmitted to Earth. KSC-04pd2127

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - For the second morning in a row, the STS-121 crew sit for their traditional breakfast before suiting up for launch.  Seated from left are Mission Specialists Piers Sellers and Michael Fossum, Pilot Mark Kelly, Commander Steven Lindsey, and Mission Specialists Lisa Nowak, Stephanie Wilson and Thomas Reiter, who represents the European Space Agency.  The first launch attempt July 1 was scrubbed due to weather concerns and postponed 24 hours.   The launch of Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-121 is the 115th shuttle flight and the 18th U.S. flight to the International Space Station. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -   Kicking up dust as it touches down on Runway 15 at NASA's Shuttle Landing Facility, the orbiter Discovery completes mission STS-121 to the International Space Station.  At touchdown -- nominally about 2,500 ft. beyond the runway threshold -- the orbiter is traveling at a speed ranging from 213 to 226 mph.  Discovery traveled  5.3 million miles, landing on orbit 202.  Mission elapsed time was 12 days, 18 hours, 37 minutes and 54 seconds.  Main gear touchdown occurred on time at 9:14:43 EDT.  Wheel stop was at 9:15:49 EDT.  The returning crew members aboard are Commander Steven Lindsey, Pilot Mark Kelly and Mission Specialists Piers Sellers, Michael Fossum, Lisa Nowak and Stephanie Wilson.  Mission Specialist Thomas Reiter, who launched with the crew on July 4, remained on the station to join the Expedition 13 crew there.  The landing is the 62nd at Kennedy Space Center and the 32nd for Discovery. Kennedy Space Center hosted one of the over 90 locations around the world where participants congregated for the attempt to design innovative solutions for global challenges over a 48-hour period. This year's development marathon focused on five NASA mission areas: Asteroids, Earth Watch, Human Spaceflight, Robotics, and Technology in Space. Three of this year’s challenges were developed by KSC employees: Space Wearables: Fashion Designer to Astronauts, Growing Food for a Martian Table, and Asteroid Prospector. The winners selected in 2014 at Kennedy were Astronaut Resource Managing System, or ARMS, for Best Use of Data and SpaceWear for Best Use of Hardware. ARMS also took the People's Choice Award. Nowak is making her first space flight.  The launch is the 115th shuttle flight and the 18th U.S. flight to the International Space Station. KSC workers are participating in the Columbia Recovery efforts at the Lufkin (Texas) Command Center, four field sites in East Texas, and the Barksdale, La., Hangar site. NASA's Node 2, built by the European Space Agency (ESA) in Italy arrived at KSC on June 1. It will be the next pressurized module installed on the Station. The pressurized module of the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), named "Kibo" (Hope) arrived at KSC on June 4. It is Japan's primary contribution to the Station. The ceremony held today included the official transfer of ownership signing of Node 2 between the ESA and NASA..  Speakers at the ceremony included KSC Director Roy Bridges Jr.; NASA's Michael C. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -  In the Space Station Processing Facility at NASA Kennedy Space Center, STS-121 Mission Specialist Piers Sellers practices working with the replacement trailing umbilical system reel assembly that will be installed on the International Space Station.  He and other crew members -- Commander Steven Lindsey, Pilot Mark Kelly and Mission Specialists Lisa Nowak, Stephanie Wilson and Michael Fossum -- are at Kennedy to take part in the crew equipment interface test (CEIT).  The CEIT provides hands-on experiences with equipment used on-orbit. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -   STS-121 Mission Specialist Lisa Nowak is happy to be making a third launch attempt on the mission.  She is suiting up before heading to Launch Pad 39B.   The July 2 launch attempt was scrubbed due to the presence of showers and thunderstorms within the surrounding area of the launch site. The launch of Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-121 is the 115th shuttle flight and the 18th U.S. flight to the International Space Station.  During the 12-day mission, the STS-121 crew will test new equipment and procedures to improve shuttle safety, as well as deliver supplies and make repairs to the International Space Station. Discovery traveled  5.3 million miles, landing on orbit 202.  Mission elapsed time was 12 days, 18 hours, 37 minutes and 54 seconds.  Main gear touchdown occurred on time at 9:14:43 EDT.  Wheel stop was at 9:15:49 EDT.  The returning crew members are Commander Steven Lindsey, Pilot Mark Kelly and Mission Specialists Piers Sellers, Michael Fossum, Lisa Nowak and Stephanie Wilson.  Mission Specialist Thomas Reiter, who launched with the crew on July 4, remained on the station to join the Expedition 13 crew there.  The landing is the 62nd at Kennedy Space Center and the 32nd for Discovery.  Discovery's landing was as exhilarating as its launch, the first to take place on America's Independence Day. During the mission, the STS-121 crew tested new equipment and procedures to improve shuttle safety, and delivered supplies and made repairs to the International Space Station.
