Skylab and Mir Space Stations: In 1964, design and feasibility studies were initiated for missions that could use modified Apollo hardware for a number of possible lunar and Earth-orbital scientific and applications missions. An S-IVB stage of a Saturn V launch vehicle was outfitted completely as a workshop. The Skylab 1 Orbital Workshop with its Apollo Telescope Mount was launched into orbit May 14, 1973. The Skylab 2, 3 and 4 missions, each with three-man crews, proved that humans could live and work in space for extended periods. The Shuttle-Mir Program was a joint effort between 1994-1998 which allowed American and Russian crews to share expertise and knowledge while working together in space. As preparation for the construction of the International Space Station, Shuttle-Mir encompassed 11 space shuttle flights and 7 astronaut residencies on the Russian space station Mir. First pair of brothers among the AJA [Americans of Japanese ancestry] volunteers inducted into the U.S. Army in the territory were Chitsugi, twenty-three, and Minoru Manabe, twenty-eight, who took the oath of allegiance together among the first batch of fifty-eight Kauai registrants sworn in. Both were born at Anahola but lived in Kealia, Kauai with their elder sister Fumiyo Hashimoto who is shown bidding them goodbye. Both went to the Kapaa Grammar School and last worked for the Lihue Plantation Company. America's youth builds and flies model planes on miniature flying fields. Model planes of all types and sizes are being tuned up by their owners for a competitive meet at Modelhaven Airport, near the City of Baltimore in the eastern U.S. state of Maryland. Although fewer participants have turned up in the past few years, because of the numbers now serving in the armed forces, young model builders bring to Modelhaven, "the world's smallest airport," many model planes which show astonishing improvements over previous models. Thes young model builders will put the knowledge of aeronautics gained in home and school workshps to good use in the air-minded post-war world. Courses in aeronautics have recently been added to the curriculum in many U.S. high schools

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- On Launch Pad 17-B at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the Dawn spacecraft arrives at the upper level of the mobile service tower. It will be moved inside and prepared for mating with the awaiting Delta II rocket. Dawn is scheduled for launch in a window from 7:25 to 7:54 a.m. Sept. 26 from CCAFS. During its nearly decade-long mission, the Dawn mission will study the asteroid Vesta and dwarf planet Ceres, celestial bodies believed to have accreted early in the history of the solar system. To carry out its scientific mission, the Dawn spacecraft will carry a visible camera, a visible and infrared mapping spectrometer, and a gamma ray and neutron spectrometer, whose data will be used in combination to characterize these bodies. In addition to the three instruments, radiometric and optical navigation data will provide data relating to the gravity field and thus bulk properties and internal structure of the two bodies. Data returned from the Dawn spacecraft could provide opportunities for significant breakthroughs in our knowledge of how the solar system formed. Photo credit: NASA/Jack Pfaller KSC-07pd2428

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Pink Team participates in the regional FIRST robotics competition at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The team is made up of students from Rockledge, Cocoa Beach and Viera high schools along the Space Coast of Florida. NASA’s Kennedy Space Center is a sponsor of the team. The Pink Team finished sixth in the competition called "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology," or FIRST, among about 60 high school teams hoping to advance to the national robotics championship. The team also took home the Industrial Design Award sponsored by General Motors. Kennedy's Deputy Director Janet Petro and Engineering Director Pat Simpkins also stopped by the competition to encourage the teams. FIRST, founded in 1989, is a non-profit organization that designs accessible, innovative programs to build self-confidence, knowledge and life skills while motivating young people to pursue academic opportunities. The robotics competition challenges teams of high school students and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard kit of parts and a common set of rules. The team is made up of students from the School for Arts and Innovative Learning SAIL High School in Tallahassee. More than 60 high school teams took part in the competition called "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology," or FIRST, in hopes of advancing to the national robotics championship. This year, the competition resembled a basketball game and was dubbed "Rebound Rumble." The game measured the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration and the determination of the teams.
