Ceremonies - Preparedness Day, May 1916 - Highlanders, Gayly kilted, arrive in New York to spur British recruiting. Two hundred and fifty Gordon and McLean Highlanders brought Fifth Avenue to its street windowns to view the passing of the Scotsman as they swung down the thoroughfare headed by their bagpipers. They were the chief attraction of British Recruiting Week beginning July 16, 1917. A big rally on Friday night at Madison Square Garden wound up the weeks activities. Lord Northcliffe and James M. Beck were the principal speakers. Photo shows the Highlanders, marching through the streets of New York City on their way to the 71st Regiment armory at 34th Street and Park Avenue

[Severe Storms, Tornadoes, and Flooding] GREENSBURG, KS, 5-7-07 --- FEMA Administrator R. David Paulison, flanked by Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, right, and Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, head of the Kansas Air National Guard, toured the small town hit by a powerful tornado Friday (5-4-07).  Nearly every home in the community was destroyed or badly damaged, and more than two dozen people died or suffered serious injuries.
