Example of self-resettlement in California. Oklahoma farm family on highway between Blythe and Indio. Forced by the drought of 1936 to abandon their farm, they set out with their children to drive to California. Picking cotton in Arizona for a day or two at a time gave them enough for food and gas to continue. On this day, they were within a day's travel of their destination, Bakersfield, California. Their car had broken down en route and was abandoned

A battery of 1,000 and 2,000 pound furnaces roaring threats to the Axis. These are rotary, oil-fired melting furnaces at Aluminum Industries Inc. Destination of the finished aluminum products is kept secret
Aluminum casting. Stock room in the shipping department of a large Midwest aluminum factory. Completed rings may be destined for use by Uncle Sam's armed forces--somewhere in the field. Exact use and destination of these articles has been kept secret. Aluminum Industries Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio
Aluminum casting. Womens' place in this large Midwest aluminum factory is on the inspection line. She's giving a final checkup on these aluminum pistons which are destined for use by America's armed forces. Destination of the finished aluminum products is kept secret. They'll probably end up as jeep or airplane engine parts. Aluminum Industries Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio
Production. Naval gun mounts. A naval gun mount assembly, one of many produced in a Midwest plant, is carefully inspected before shipment to an undisclosed destination. Westinghouse, Louisville, Kentucky

Aluminum casting. Closeup of the bright aluminum alloy being poured into molds. There may be no more aluminum for coffee percolators these days; it's going instead toward a much more vital purpose--war essentials for Uncle Sam's armed forces. Destination of the finished aluminum products is secret--but they'll probably end up as jeeps or airplane engine parts. Aluminum Industries Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio
Production. Milling machines and machine castings. This picture shows the general setup on the foundry floor. Notice the overlapping cranes (above and left). Any one of four cranes can come in to pick up full ladles, depending on their size and destination. Location: a large Midwest machine tool foundry

Aluminum casting. Application of parting compound to unfinished mold, another step in the making of valuable aluminum parts for America's armed forces. Aluminum casting. These castings are being loaded onto a sandblast table prior to the actual sandblasting operation. Conversion of this large Midwest aluminum foundry to production of war essentials has already taken place. This factory is producing aluminum equipment for Uncle Sam's war effort, under subcontract to other factories producing war items. Destination of the finished aluminum products is kept secret, but they'll probably end up as jeeps and airplane engines. Aluminum Industries Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio
De Land pool. Babcock airplane plant. The last operation in the De Land, Florida industrial pool is buttoning up the huge motor repair racks in their packing crates, sealing them against everything from sand to seawater. Left is Mary Babcock, daughter of plant owner, who never dreamed she would be painting destination letters on a war crate when she was studying art six months ago. In the foreground is John Kicklighton, who was an insurance salesman before going to work on the production front
Aluminum casting. Ladling of molten aluminum alloy into the gate of a closed permanent mold. Site of these operations is a large Midwest aluminum foundry now converted to production of essentials for America's armed forces. The part being cast here may be destined for the engine of a "jeep" or part of an airplane engine. Their exact destination is kept a secret. Aluminum Industries Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio
Aluminum casting. Duds, rejected for imperfections, are thrown back into the furnaces for recasting. Location: a large Midwest aluminum foundry now converted to production of war essentials. Aluminum casting. Sturdy workers in an aluminum plant pictured as they tap a 450-pound tilting-type crucible furnace to pour the molten into smaller gats from which further pourings are made. The finished product will be sent to a converted automobile factory or to an Eastern manufacturer of bomb sights. Specific destination for the aluminum parts is secret. Aluminum Industries Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio
Aluminum casting. When the aluminum solidifies, it is knocked out by hammer from the ingot molds. Soon to be cast into essentials for the war effort, this metal is one of America's most vital essentials for victory. Destination of the finished aluminum products is kept secret--but they'll probably end up as jeeps or airplane engines parts. Aluminum Industries Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio

Lease lend loadings. Welding wheels of Douglas twin-engine light bombers to a platform on deck insures safe transit from an American port to the bombers' destination. Crews of highly specialized workers are required to load assembled planes on shipboard and to prevent their becoming dislodged in heavy seas. These precautions are unnecessary when planes are sent unassembled in crates; however, most planes going to the Near East are shipped ready for flight within one hour after docking, since in many ports competent unloading equipment is lacking or has been demolished by Axis raids
Chicago, Illinois. Conductor handling engineer copy of train orders before a Chicago and Northwestern Railroad freight train pulls out for Clinton, Iowa. Since the track between those points is under automatic train control, the engineer, in turn, hands the conductor the key to the automatic train control lock of the engine. This image is the first full picture showing both asteroid 243 Ida and its newly discovered moon to be transmitted to Earth from NASA's Galileo spacecraft--the first conclusive evidence that natural satellites of asteroids exist. Ida is the large object to the left, about 56 kilometers (35 miles long). Ida's natural satellite is the small object to the right. This portrait was taken by Galileo's charge-coupled device (CCD) camera on August 28, 1993, about 14 minutes before the spacecraft's closest approach to the asteriod, from a range of 10,870 kilometers (6,755 miles). Ida is a heavily cratered, irregularly shaped asteroid in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter-- the 243rd asteroid to be discovered since the first one was found at the beginning of the 19th century. It is a member of a group of asteroids called the Koronis family. The small satellite, which is about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) across in this view, has yet to be given a name by astronomers. It has been provisionally designated '1993 (243) 1' by the International Astronomical Union. (The numbers denote the year the picture was taken, the asteroid number and the fact that it is the first moon of Ida to be found.) ALthough the satellite appears to be 'next' to Ida it is actually slightly in the foreground, closer to the spacecraft than Ida. Combining this image with data from Galileo's near-infrared mapping spectrometer, the science team estimates that the object is about 100 kilometers (60 miles) away from the center of Ida. This image is one of a six-frame series taken through different color filters, this one in green. The spatial resolution in this image is about 100 meters (330 feet) per pixel. The Galileo spacecraft flew past Ida en route to its final destination, Jupiter, where it will go into orbit in December 1995. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory manages the galileo Project for NASA's Office of Space Science. (JPL ref. No. P-43731) ARC-1994-A91-2018

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- The Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, with the orbiter Columbia strapped to its back, waits at the Shuttle Landing Facility for clear weather to take off for its final destination, Palmdale, Calif. The oldest of four orbiters in NASA's fleet, Columbia is being ferried to Palmdale to undergo extensive inspections and modifications in Boeing's Orbiter Assembly Facility. The nine-month orbiter maintenance down period (OMDP) is the second in Columbia's history. Orbiters are periodically removed from flight operations for an OMDP. Columbia's first was in 1994. Along with more than 100 modifications on the vehicle, Columbia will be the second orbiter to be outfitted with the multifunctional electronic display system, or "glass cockpit." Columbia is expected to return to KSC in July 2000 KSC-99pp1142
