Agriculture finds new ways to keep flowers free from destructive insect pests. Beltsville, MD, Aug. 30. The bureau of Plant Quarantine and Entomology of the Dept. of Agriculture, has perfected treatments that keep tiny thrips from ruining Gladiola blooms, it worked them out by subjecting the bulbs to various treatments, planting the bulbs in a large field at the experimental station at Beltsville, MD, and examining the plants as they bloomed. The bulbs were numbered and the records of the treatment they received before being planted. A record of the condition of the flowers on the plants from each bulb was also kept. These records showed that treating bulbs with naphthalene flakes - easily obtained at stores dealing in chemicals - killed all thrips present in the [..] the flowers are examined when they reach full [...] is noted and their size is measured, [...] the left and G.V. Washing. After certain dilute chemicals have been recovered from the rubber, it is in the form of flocs or crumbs looking like popcorn. It is then washed and excess water is removed

Army truck manufacture (Dodge). Cab assemblies entering huge rust-proofing ovens. In this process the raw sheet metal of the cabs is treated with various chemicals before any finishing coats are applied. This rust-proofing insures against the spread of rust in cases of accidents which damage the finish of the metal after the trunk has been put into service

Steel manufacture, Allegheny-Ludlum. This quality steel tubing and piping will eventually be used to convey, refine or distill elements used in defense production. Expensive alloy steels are used, particularly for chemical piping. Special alloys have been devised to resist specific chemicals
Weighing ingredients. As in any recipe, this measuring of ingredients for the "batch" of the rubber must be done with great care. At this point it is determined whether the raw rubber will be converted into tread stock, fabric gum, tube stock, repair material or mechanical rubber stock. All ingredients--rubber, chemicals, liquids--are placed in the metal tub, and delivered to the mill room for processing. General Tires, Akron, Ohio
Conversion. Beverage containers to aviation oxygen cylinders. Removing of non-shatter-chemical solution tank at a rubber factory now producing metal essential for the Army. This bath, which follows the removal of the weld scale, gives the inside of the cylinder a further cleaning and removes all chemicals which may remain from the previous operation. A satin-like surface, absolutely sterile and free from foreign matter, is made permanent in this operation. The cylinder is now also immune to attack from corrosion and other deteriorating elements. Firestone, Akron, Ohio
Production. P-51 "Mustang" fighter planes. A North American Aviation woman employee at Inglewood, California, sits astride a "Mustang" fighter for Royal Air Force (RAF), as she places a bag of chemicals in the plane to prevent the accumulation of moisture. This plant produces the battle-tested B-25 "Billy Mitchell" bomber, used in General Doolittle's raid on Tokyo, and the P-51 fighter plane which was first brought into prominence by the British raid on Dieppe

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- EOS Aura: The Aura mission will study air quality, climate and stratospheric ozone depletion. Aura is the third of NASA’s major Earth Observing System (EOS) orbital platforms and has four instruments. The Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) and the High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder (HIRDLS) will make complementary measurements of stratospheric ozone and the chemicals that destroy it. HIRDELS and MLS will also measure upper tropospheric water vapor and ozone - key gases that regulate climate. The Aura payload also includes the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES), which will make the first global measurements of lower atmospheric ozone, and the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), which will measure the total amount of atmospheric ozone as well as lower atmospheric dust, smoke and other aerosols. Aura is scheduled to launch in 2004. The flags on the decals represent the countries participating in the mission: United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands and Finland.
