This photo shows what was formerly a chicken coop, in which during the berry season the Arnao family live on Hitchen's farm, Seaford, Del. 17 children and 5 elders live in this made over chicken coop. The age of 10 of the children is given below: 1 Child is 3 years old; 1 Child is 4 years old; 1 Child is 5 years old; 1 Child is 6 years old; 2 Children are 7 years old; 1 Child is 9 years old; 1 Child is 10 years old; 1 Child is 11 years old; 1 Child is 13 years old. Another photo in this collection shows the Arnao family on Truitt's Farm. On the day of the investigation no berries being picked on Hitchen's Farm. The family went over to the Truitt's farm to pick. A group of berry pickers on the farm of Mr. Giles, Seaford, Del. 3 children are 3 years of age, 3 are 4 years old, 1 is 5 years old, and 1 is 6 years old. During the berry season the families get out into the field at 4 o'clock in the morning, and each child is assigned to 2 rows of berry growth, each 300 yards, long, and when the whistle of the padrone sounds they start picking and generally quit work about 1 P.M. There are days when the work continues until 4 and 5 o'clock in the evening.  Location: Seaford, Delaware.

Fruit jars being sterilized on old lady Graham's back fence in berry season. Near Conway, Arkansas. "We just gather and can peas, beans, berries, and sausage when we butcher the hogs in the winter. We put up seventy-five quarts of berries, sixty of beans, sixty of kraut, thirty of grapes and twenty of peaches. I swapped two bushels of grapes and got two bushels of peaches and I swapped one bushel of grapes for one bushel of apples"
