Lower Burnside bridge, Antietam National Battlefield
During Battle of Antietam, Sept 17, 1862, Union divisions made repeated attempts to cross Antietam Creek at this point. Confederates defended bluff on opposite bank. Maj Gen AE Burnside led the successful crossing.
