Operating a riveting press, which attaches cloth tabs to the face pieces of gas masks, this young worker is one of the many company employees who switched over from work on vacuums when the plant was converted. Betty likes her new job better than the old one. "It bears a lot more relationship to my American Women's Voluntary Services work," she says. Eureka Vacuum, Detroit, Michigan

Each splint is designed to fit the particular limb for which it is intended. A plaster cast is taken at the hospital of the injured limb (a cast of a badly deformed limb is seen in the background) and the splint is modelled on the cast in paier mache, which by the invention of one of the American women connected with the institution, has been rendered antiseptic and waterproof. American women in London helped the British Red Cross in its annual "drive" for funds by taking charge of all the work of collections on Bond St., the Fifth Avenue of London. The headquarters of the American women were in a large store at No. 16 Bond St. which was decorated with American flags and Red Cross posters. Throughout the day, the "American shop" was the mecca for thousands and it did a thriving business in little flags, souvenirs and pins. American Red Cross posters were sold to the highest bidders, and frequently fetched fabulous prices. While this central depot was disposing of its wares, the American women canvassed the famous thoroughfare from end to end, selling flags. The whole work was in charge of Mrs. George E. Short of Brooklyn
