Amer. Nurses on the porch of their Red Cross Club house on the banks of the River Test, Somewhere-in-England. "I don't know why they should call it a river," the newly arrived nurse invariably remarks, for is seems too small to be dignified by any name more ambitious than "creek", but they learn to like as they grow more familiar with it. The Nurses' Club, built up close to the Amer. Hospital, is an unpretentious little building of cottage type, but cozy and comfortable, with pleasant dining rooms and lounge rooms and reading rooms and a few bed rooms. The front yard is full of holly, which the nurses have been tending carefully in anticipation of using it at Christmas time

The shell-chock ward, while the gasers are from the ward devoted to men who have been gassed on the Western front. The Amer. Doctors have found that baseball is one of the best treatments for shell-shock cases. Two of three nurses are always assigned to duty on the side lines to see that their patients don't overdo the treatment. The climate in Eng. is such that baseball can be played pretty well in winter. The photograph was taken in mid-November

Amer. Nurses, Somewhere-in-England off for an hour's walk along the tiny River Test, beloved of Florence Nightingale, who lived along its banks. Her grave is in a tiny village churchyard, not far from the Amer. Hospital (of which this picture shows the Red Cross Nurses Club). Most of the nurses have made the pilgrimage to the little churchyard many times. The Nightingale Tomb is plain and unimposing. On three sides of it are inscribed the names of Miss Nightingale's father, mother and sister, while the fourth bears the simple inscription, "F.N., born May 12, 1820; died August 13, 1910"
