Air raid protection--what NOT to do when alarm sounds. DON'T look out the windows. Johnnie doesn't mean to be a fifth columnist, but in looking out and attempting to see the planes he's flashing a swell signal just the same; in addition this is a dangerous place for him to be because of flying glass splinters which might well result from the concussion caused by a bomb falling nearby. Looking out the window is fruitless also because there is nothing one can see during a blackout

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Between 1962 and 1963, the Mission Control Center was modified to handle the additional complexities of the Gemini Program. In 1962, Pan American World Airways Inc. was contracted to design an addition to the facility, which wrapped around the east, north, and most of the west and south sides. The Mercury Mission Control Center in Florida played a key role in the United States' early spaceflight program. Located at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, the original part of the building was constructed between 1956 and 1958, with additions in 1959 and 1963. The facility officially was transferred to NASA on Dec. 26, 1963, and served as mission control during all the Project Mercury missions, as well as the first three flights of the Gemini Program, when it was renamed Mission Control Center. With its operational days behind, on June 1, 1967, the Mission Control Center became a stop on the public tour of NASA facilities until the mid-90s. In 1999, much of the equipment and furnishings from the Flight Control Area were moved to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex where they became part of the exhibit there. The building was demolished in spring 2010. Photo credit: NASA KSC-LOC-63-5635

How to conserve household gas. Use as little water as possible when cooking most vegetables. For in addition to conserving their vitamin content, this method decreases cooking time and uses less gas. The best way to cook many vegetables is to bring the water to a quick boil, then reduce the flame when the boiling has started. A high flame will not hasten the cooking. All that is necessary is to use a low blue flame sufficient to keep water boiling

Workers in KSC's Space Station Processing Facility (SSPF) assist in removing the protective casing from the Z1 Integrated Truss Segment (ITS), a major element of the STS-92 mission scheduled for launch aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis in January 1999. The Z-1 truss supports the staged buildup of International Space Station (ISS) on this third scheduled flight for ISS. The Z1 truss allows the temporary installation of the U.S. power module to Node 1. Early in the assembly sequence, the purpose of Z1 is to provide a mounting location for Ku-band and S-band telemetry and extravehicular activity (EVA) equipment. It also provides common berthing mechanism hardcover stowage. In addition, it will assist with the execution of nonpropulsive attitude control. The truss arrived at KSC on Feb. 17 for preflight processing in the SSPF KSC-98pc299

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- Seen at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, this nine-banded armadillo may be looking for food. Introduced to Florida in the early 1900's, this species is found statewide in areas with dense ground cover and sandy soil. Nine bands of plates cover the body from shoulder to hip and 12 bands cover the long tail. It has a small, tapered head and snout and a long tongue. Its ears are long and hairless. It has sparse white hairs on its belly. Its diet is composed of insects, especially beetles, and other invertebrates plus some plant foods such as cedars and beautyberries. It is primarily nocturnal, sedentary, solitary and a burrower. It digs a series of dens. The multiple entrances are usually protected by stumps, palmettos, or trees. Many other animals also use armadillo dens. KSC shares a boundary with the Merritt Island Wildlife Nature Refuge. The refuge is a habitat for more than 310 species of birds, 25 mammals, 117 fishes and 65 amphibians and reptiles. In addition, the Refuge supports 19 endangered or threatened wildlife species on Federal or State lists, more than any other single refuge in the U.S. Photo credit: NASA/Ken Thornsley KSC-07pd0147

After arrival at the Shuttle Landing Facility, STS-102 Mission Specialist Yury Usachev laughs at a comment from the media. At the right can be seen Commander James Wetherbee. The crew is making the eighth construction flight to the International Space Station. In addition, Usachev is part of the Expedition Two crew who will be replacing Expedition One on the Station. STS-102 will be carrying the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Leonardo, the primary delivery system used to resupply and return Station cargo requiring a pressurized environment. Leonardo will deliver up to 10 tons of laboratory racks filled with equipment, experiments and supplies for outfitting the newly installed U.S. Laboratory Destiny. STS-102 is scheduled to launch March 8 at 6:42 a.m. EST KSC-01pp0406

At Launch Complex 17-A, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, workers check the fairing now enclosing the Mars Odyssey spacecraft inside. The Mars Odyssey is scheduled for launch aboard a Delta II rocket April 7, 2001, at 11:02 a.m. EST. NASA’s latest explorer carries three scientific instruments to map the chemical and mineralogical makeup of Mars: a thermal-emission imaging system, a gamma ray spectrometer and a Martian radiation environment experiment. The imaging system will map the planet with high-resolution thermal images and give scientists an increased level of detail to help them understand how the mineralogy of the planet relates to the land forms. In addition, Odyssey will serve as a communications relay for U.S. and international landers arriving at Mars in 2003/2004 KSC01pp0709

A MC-130 Combat Shadow tanker and two HH-60G Pavehawk helicopters from the 129th Rescue Wing fly in formation over San Francisco, California. The mission of the 129th is to train and be prepared to perform its wartime mission of combat search and rescue anywhere in the world. Its personnel and aircraft locate and recover aircrew and non-aircrew personnel from both enemy-held and friendly territory and seas. In addition, the 129th provides manpower, materiel and equipment to conduct peacetime search and rescue operations in the Pacific Ocean and off the coast of California, and is one of only three Rescue Wings in the Air National Guard. The 129th has saved 292 lives since 1975, and six so...
