Subcontracting aircraft parts. High speed production of small parts for airplane sub-assembling is expedited by simultaneous use of the three drills shown. This plant has been converted from its former use as an airship dock. Goodyear, Akron, Ohio

Flotation bag manufacturing. Spherical flotation bag used in a famous American bombing plane for protection in event of crash landing at sea. Bags are carried, deflated, in wings and fuselage and may be inflated almost instantly with compressed air contained in cylinders. Goodyear, Akron, Ohio

Subcontracting aircraft parts. Constant inspection is the order of the plants where Uncle Sam's military machines are being turned out. They've got to measure up, or else--this inspector is checking an airplane part. Plan parts are subcontracted to this huge plant which was formerly an airship dock. Goodyear, Akron, Ohio

Piles of bagged compound ingredients. Tire ingredients which are drawn from this reserve pile for each new set of "batches" include these bags of calcene, carbon black, zinc oxide and various other ingredients. General Tires

Flotation bag manufacturing. Woman balloon room worker applying finishing touches to inflatable flotation bags used to float marine aircraft forced down at sea. Goodyear, Akron, Ohio

Aircraft tire manufacture. Wide range of tire sizes required for military aircraft is illustrated by this photograph. Tire at bottom is of type used on average medium bomber while small tires at top are for tail wheels of various types. Goodyear, Akron, Ohio

Removing the finished tire from the tire drum. The inner drum shoes are unlocked after the tire is loosened; They are removed, leaving the tire free to slide right off. Then they are replaced and the next tire is started. Firestone (General Tires), Akron, Ohio

Subcontracting aircraft parts. Many strange-looking tools are required to get into the difficult places where rivets must be placed in the modern military airplane. Workers are working on an airplane sub-assembly part in an Ohio plant. Goodyear, Akron, Ohio

Rubber reclamation. Recovering rubber from old tires. In the central wash tanks of a large Midwest plant employing the xylos process, agitated water removes dirt, treated fiber and excess fiber solvent. This operation follows removal of bead portions from scrap casings, breaking of casings into small pieces and dissolving of fiber in caustic soda. The resultant phases of rubber are then pumped to dewatering sources. Firestone

Rubber reclamation. Scrap tires mobilized for Victory. Millions of discarded casings cover more than 100 acres at one Midwest recovery plant. Systematic piling and sectional arrangement reduce fire hazard. Special processes will separate metal from the tires and tube bodies. The reclaimed material will be used to manufacture thousands of essential mechanical rubber products. Firestone

The serial numbers of each track for Army halftrac vehicles crated for shipment from a Midwest tire plant are given a final check. Goodrich, Akron, Ohio

Subcontracting aircraft parts. This giant hydraulic press with rubber insert is used to stamp out numerous sub-assembly parts for planes at this huge converted airship dock. These "sub-assembly" parts are put together at the different plants and then sent to the plane plants for inclusion in the finished plane. Goodyear, Akron, Ohio

Rubber reclamation. Producing reclaimed rubber. Rubber scrap, obtained by dissolving and washing away all fibrous materials, passes through a steaming operation. It will then go through the drying, refining and other xylos processes at a big Midwest plant that is recovering large quantities for war essentials. Firestone

Military tire manufacture. Huge truck tire like those shown in this tire storeroom are playing important part in the nation's war effort. Tires like these are used on huge trucks and military prime movers. Goodyear, Akron, Ohio

Wrapped, sealed, labeled. Ready for delivery, this finished tire carries the description and size of the tire on an outside label. May be kept for a long period when wrapped in this protective covering, but during the war emergency, most tires are sent out unwrapped because it thus saves paper, they are usually put into immediate use and require no storage protective, and there is less need for attention to appearance. A track for an Army halftrac car nears completion as curing plates nuts are removed with an air pressure wrench on the trimming rack of a Midwest rubber plant. Goodrich, Akron, Ohio
