Edward H. Ripley to Abraham Lincoln, Wednesday, April 05, 1865 (War materials abandoned at Richmond)

The city of Acre from the south. The mount of the Nahr Na'mân, the ancient river Belus, in the foreground, where, tradition says, glass was first produced by an accidental combination of the necessary materials.

Ruined mosque, north of Ba'albek. Rudely built of ancient materials. There are ten columns of polished red granite and eighteen limestone columns, all surmounted by richly carved limestone capitals.

Reservoirs of Râs el 'Ain and part of the Roman aqueduct. Close to this spot stood Palaeotyrus of which no vestige now remains, the materials have been carried away by Alexander (332 B.C.) to construct the more or causeway which unites insular Tyre to the mainland.

El Mejdel, the Ancient Migdol. An important village of fifteen hundred inhabitants. Its mosque and tall minaret are constructed of ancient materials. A weekly fair is held here.
