History

The White House, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., has served as the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States since 1800. Designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban in the Neoclassical style, construction began in 1792 and was completed in 1800. The White House has undergone several renovations and expansions throughout its history, most notably after a fire set by British troops during the War of 1812.

Architecture
