José Clemente Orozco (1883-1949) was a Mexican painter and muralist known for his politically charged and socially critical works. He was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and began his artistic career in 1904 while studying at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City. Orozco's work was strongly influenced by the Mexican Revolution and the political and social upheavals of the early 20th century. He used his art to criticise the injustices and inequalities of Mexican society, often depicting scenes of violence, poverty and oppression. Some of Orozco's most famous works include his murals at the National Preparatory School in Mexico City, which depict the struggles of the Mexican people throughout history. He also painted murals at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, the New School for Social Research in New York City and the Hospicio Cabañas in Guadalajara. Orozco's style is characterised by bold colours, strong lines and a dramatic use of light and shadow. He is considered one of the "great three" Mexican muralists, along with Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Orozco died in 1949 at the age of 65, leaving behind a legacy as one of Mexico's most important artists and a champion of social justice through art.
