public

Overview

Yokosuka Naval Base is a major United States Navy installation located in Yokosuka, Japan. It is the only overseas base for the U.S. 7th Fleet and plays a crucial role in maintaining stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region. The base occupies approximately 2,700 acres and houses over 24,000 military personnel, civilian employees, and their families.

History

Yokosuka Naval Base has a long and rich history dating back to the late 19th century. In 1854, Commodore Matthew Perry negotiated the Treaty of Kanagawa, which opened Japan to trade with the West. As part of the treaty, the United States was granted the right to use the port of Hakodate for refueling and repairs.

In 1873, the Japanese government leased the port of Yokosuka to the United States. The U.S. Navy began developing the base in 1887, and it officially became a naval base in 1903. During World War II, Yokosuka served as the home port for the Japanese Imperial Navy. After the war, the base was occupied by the U.S. Navy and has remained a vital part of the U.S. military presence in the region ever since.

Facilities

Yokosuka Naval Base is a modern and well-equipped facility. It includes a variety of amenities for its personnel, including housing, schools, hospitals, and recreational facilities. The base also has a number of operational facilities, such as piers, dry docks, and repair shops.

Mission

The mission of Yokosuka Naval Base is to provide support to the U.S. 7th Fleet and to promote peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The base plays a critical role in maintaining the U.S. military's presence in the region and in deterring potential aggression.

Importance

Yokosuka Naval Base is a vital asset to the United States and its allies. It is a key component of the U.S. military's presence in the Indo-Pacific region and plays a crucial role in maintaining stability and security in the area. The base is also an important economic driver for the city of Yokosuka and the surrounding region.
