National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Hawaii

public

Location and History

The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific is located in Honolulu, Hawaii, on the slopes of the extinct volcano Punchbowl Crater. Established in 1949, it is the final resting place for over 53,000 veterans and their dependents from all branches of the United States Armed Forces. The cemetery also holds the remains of civilians who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Design and Features

The cemetery's design is inspired by the traditional Hawaiian concept of "ahupua'a," which represents a self-sufficient land division. The main entrance features a reflecting pool and a bronze statue of Lady Columbia, the personification of the United States. The "courts of honor" are arranged in a series of concentric circles, with the "courts of the missing" located at the center.

Notable Interments

The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific is the final resting place for many notable figures, including:

  • Senator Daniel Inouye: A decorated World War II veteran and the first Japanese American to serve in the U.S. Senate.
  • Admiral Chester W. Nimitz: Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II.
  • Vice Admiral John S. McCain Sr.: Grandfather of Senator John McCain and a decorated naval officer.
  • Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd: Captain of the USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Visiting the Cemetery

The National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific is open to the public daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Visitors can explore the grounds, pay their respects at the gravesites, and learn about the history of the cemetery and the veterans buried there. The cemetery also offers educational programs and guided tours.

Additional Information

  • The cemetery is managed by the National Cemetery Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • The cemetery is a popular tourist destination and a place of pilgrimage for veterans and their families.
  • The cemetery hosts several events throughout the year, including Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies.
