A Monument to the Fallen

India Gate is a majestic war memorial located in the heart of New Delhi, India. It stands as a poignant tribute to the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during World War I and the Afghan Wars.

Design and Architecture

The monument's design draws inspiration from the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. It is a towering structure, 42 meters high, built from sandstone and granite. The intricate carvings and inscriptions on its walls depict scenes from the battles and the names of the fallen soldiers.

Eternal Flame

Beneath the archway lies the Amar Jawan Jyoti, an eternal flame that burns day and night in memory of the brave soldiers. The flame was lit by India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in 1971 after the India-Pakistan War.

A Place of Remembrance and Reflection

India Gate is not just a monument; it is a place of remembrance and reflection. Every year on Republic Day and Independence Day, the President of India lays a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti to honor the sacrifices of the fallen. The site is also a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from all over the world.

Additional Information

  • The foundation stone of India Gate was laid in 1921 by the Duke of Connaught.
  • The monument was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the architect who also designed New Delhi.
  • The names of the soldiers who died in World War II were added to the walls of India Gate in 1947.
  • The India Gate is surrounded by lush gardens and fountains, making it a beautiful and serene place to visit.
