description

Summary

Significance: Zane Grey (1872-1939), a noted fisherman and author of novels about the American West, began his professional writing career in Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania where he lived from 1906 until 1918. The house, a four-square completed in 1906 for Grey's brother and sister-in-law, was purchased by Zane Grey in 1914 and he enlarged it in 1915-16. At the time it was surrounded by a cluster of smaller houses and outbuildings that served as family compound and production center for Grey's early novels. After years of intermittent use by the Greys and their friends, the house was purchased in 1945 by Helen Davis, who operated it as an inn for 25 years. In 1973, a portion of the first floor was converted into a museum containing Zane Grey's household furnishings and memorabilia.
