Laton Alton Huffman was an American photographer born on 2 September 1854 in Warren County, Missouri. He spent most of his life in Montana, where he became known for his photographs of Native Americans, cowboys and the western landscape. Huffman first arrived in Montana in 1879 and worked as a clerk in a general store. He began taking photographs as a hobby and eventually opened his own photography studio in Miles City in 1880. Huffman's photographs captured the rugged beauty of the American West, including its people, animals and landscapes. Huffman's work gained recognition and he was commissioned to photograph the Crow Indian Reservation in 1881. He continued to photograph Native American tribes throughout his career, including the Cheyenne, Sioux and Blackfeet. His photographs of Native Americans were often posed, but they also captured candid moments of everyday life. In addition to his work with Native Americans, Huffman also photographed cowboys and ranchers. His images of cowboys on horseback, branding cattle and working on ranches helped to popularise the romantic image of the American cowboy. Huffman's photographs were widely published in newspapers and magazines, and he received numerous awards for his work. He continued to photograph until his death in Billings, Montana, on 17 July 1931. Today, Huffman's photographs are considered important historical documents of life in the American West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of his images are in the collections of museums and libraries throughout the United States.
