One of the leaders of the world avant-garde of the 20th century, Chagall managed to combine the ancient traditions of Jewish with modern culture. His early paintings are dominated by themes of childhood, family, death, deeply personal, and at the same time "eternal" ("Saturday", 1910, Walraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne). Over time, the theme of the artist's passionate love for his first wife Bella Rosenfeld ("Over the City", 1914-1918, Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow) comes to the fore.
