description

Summary

Miniature of a whale and a sailing boat, illustrating the text that a whale was so large and could go to sleep for so long, that men might mistake its back for an island, land on it, and try to light a fire before the whale would wake up and dive below the surface. Image taken from f. 69 of Bestiary, with extracts from Giraldus Cambrensis on Irish birds. Written in Latin.
