Summary

The John Gately Company (named for its Chicago-based president) had a store dealing in household goods on 5th St. in Red Jacket from the late 1880s. In 1900 a three-story sandstone building was built on 6th Street, designed by the architectural firm of Cowles & Eastman of Calumet. Cowles & Eastman also designed Calumet's Quello Block and Laurium's Peter Contralto Block.
For this new store, Gately partnered with former employee James F. Wiggins creating the Gately-Wiggins Company. The third floor originally served as a lodge hall used by fraternal groups and others, such as a Finnish Methodist Episcopal (M.E.) congregation. By World War I the store had expanded to offer furniture sales on the first floor, clothing on the second, and carpets and furniture on the third. A long-standing Calumet business was lost when a fire claimed this and two neighboring buildings in the winter of 1972; now they're #MissingintheCopperCountry.
