Virginia Road Station, Virginia, Co. Cavan

description

Summary

I had a colleague who I envied for many years, her annual vacations were always spent with "friends in Virginia". It took me 3 years to realise she was talking about Virginia Co. Cavan rather than its American namesake! I am presuming Mr O'Deas visit was to record the recent or imminent closure of this station?..Niall McAuley ( /photos/gnmcauley/ ) and beachcomberaustralia ( /photos/beachcomberaustralia/ ) tell us that this image was captured a week or so before the closure of the line - the station itself having closed to passengers a few years prior. The station building (strictly just over the county border in Meath seemingly) is apparently now a cheese factory and shop - the finest in the district ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3KBuQHHKx0&t=4m25s ) if derangedlemur ( /photos/[email protected]/ ) 's recommendation is anything to go by.......Photographer: James P. O'Dea. .Collection:James P. O'Dea ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Collection/vtls000148612 ) . .Date: 10 March 1963. .NLI Ref.: ODEA 35/60 ( http://catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000307111 ) . .You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie ( http://catalogue.nli.ie )
