Photographic survey of the upper Volga River region, primarily between Kashin and Makarev. Many views show religious facilities (monasteries, cathedrals, churches, and chapels). Includes images of religious articles (chalices, habits, frescoes, icons, iconostases, relics, sepulchres, shrouds, tabernacles, vestments) as well as items associated with Catherine the Great, Peter the Great, and Emperor Nicholas I. Also includes views of cities, towns, villages, settlements, and rivers, and occasional images of river activities and factories. Includes two images of the Romanov home in Kostroma, and one portrait of a group of peasants.

Hand-written Russian captions accompany most prints.
