In 2015, documentary photographer Carol Highsmith received a letter from Getty Images accusing her of copyright infringement for featuring one of her own photographs on her own website. It demanded payment of $120. This was how Highsmith came to learn that stock photo agencies Getty and Alamy had been sending similar threat letters and charging fees to users of her images, which she had donated to the Library of Congress for use by the general public at no charge. In 2016, Highsmith has filed a $1 billion copyright infringement suit against both Alamy and Getty stating “gross misuse” of 18,755 of her photographs. “The defendants [Getty Images] have apparently misappropriated Ms. Highsmith’s generous gift to the American people,” the complaint reads. “[They] are not only unlawfully charging licensing fees … but are falsely and fraudulently holding themselves out as the exclusive copyright owner.” According to the lawsuit, Getty and Alamy, on their websites, have been selling licenses for thousands of Highsmith’s photographs, many without her name attached to them and stamped with “false watermarks.” (more: http://hyperallergic.com/314079/photographer-files-1-billion-suit-against-getty-for-licensing-her-public-domain-images/)

People keep searching online for one question: "Where can I find free high-resolution stock images that are cleared to use without any copyright restrictions? Where to find images for blog posts or social media?" Almost every image created in the last 70 years is still protected by copyright, but you can find a public domain photo, an image that does not need attribution, or image that has copyright expired. First, it helps to understand some copyright-related terms before using any free images. Always read the terms and conditions of the site you try to use to download free images and photos, so you know if, when, and what type of attribution is required. What is Creative Commons? Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that enables the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools. There are various types of Creative Commons licenses that range from allowing any type of use with no attribution to allowing only certain uses and no changes. Most authors using Creative Commons require some sort of attribution. While relatively easy to use such free images in blogs, using such images for video might be problematic unless you create lengthy credits section. Even if you do, you still may breach the particular image Creative Commons license since it often requires backlinking. What is Public Domain? Works in the public domain are those whose copyrights have expired or never existed. The public domain status of official government works is sometimes difficult to determine but there are some easy cases: works of the United States federal government, for example, are not protected by copyright and are thus in the public domain. The same does not hold in general for the works of other governments or all 50 States of the United States. Determining whether a particular work of a particular government are in the public domain requires research and sometimes even legal advice. What is Royalty-Free? Most royalty-free images aren’t free. In most cases, you’ll have to pay a one-time fee to obtain the rights to use the image. Then you can use it as many times as you like. The term “free” in “royalty-free” means that you do not have to pay royalties to the owner of the image every time you use it. We've reviewed terms of few popular Free Image Websites below. 1. Unsplash Unsplash has its own license, which essentially lets you use the images for free, in any way you like, except for using them to create a competing website. 2. Pexels Pexels also has its own license, which states what you can and cannot do with the images. You can use and modify the images for free for both commercial and personal use without attribution. 3. Pixabay We love Pixabay. Images on Pixabay are licensed under Creative Commons Zero (CC0), which means you can use the images without asking for permission or giving credit to the artist. Pixabay also explains tricky legal language such as "model release". 4. Gratisography Gratisography also has its own free photo license, which lets you do “almost anything you can think of”. While they have not too many images, many are high-quality images that I would use. 5. Flickr Flickr is where you can find images that can be used and modified for commercial purposes. Select “Commercial use & mods allowed” under the “Any license” filter to find those images, and remember to check the license for each image as they vary. Be careful with Flickr images since as far as we can see, many images are labeled public domain wrongfully or without much research. 6. Google Image Search Google Advanced Image Search is a method of finding free-to-use images through Google’s own search tools. It is 100% automated, so you can't blindly trust the license cited. Use it with caution. Same as Flickr, Google bears no responsibility. When using free online images, always do your research.

Joseph Robinette Biden Jr. was born on November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His family was Catholic of predominantly Irish descend. Biden's father had suffered several financial setbacks by the time his son was born but later became a successful used car salesman. Negative impressions of drinking alcohol in family and in the neighborhood led Biden to be a non-drinker. While studying at Archmere Academy in Claymont, DE, Biden was a poor student but a natural leader among the students. He was elected class president during junior and senior years. Biden earned his bachelor's degree in 1965 from the University of Delaware with a double major in history and political science. He received student draft deferments but classified as unavailable for service due to a history of asthma. On August 27, 1966, while still a law student, Biden married Neilia Hunter. She was from an affluent background in Skaneateles, New York. In 1968-1969, Biden practiced law in Wilmington and registered as a Democrat. Corporate law did not appeal to him, criminal law did not pay well, so he supplemented his income by managing properties. In 1969, Biden ran and won elections to represent the 4th district on the New Castle County Council with a liberal platform that included support for public housing. In 1972 he ran U.S. Senate election in Delaware with almost no money and no chance of winning when no other Democrat wanted to run against a Republican candidate. Biden won the election. His campaign focused on withdrawal from Vietnam, the environment, civil rights, mass transit, equitable taxation, health care, and political "Change". Few weeks after the election, Biden's wife and one-year-old daughter Naomi were killed in an automobile accident while Christmas shopping in Hockessin, Delaware. Biden's sons Beau and Hunter survived the accident and were taken to the hospital in fair condition. Biden considered resigning to care for sons, but Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield persuaded him not to. At age 30 (the minimum age required to hold the office), Biden became the sixth-youngest senator in U.S. history, and one of only 18 who took office before turning 31. Biden was re-elected to six more Senate terms, in 1978, 1984, 1990, 1996, 2002, and 2008, usually getting about 60% of the vote. With a net worth between $59,000 and $366,000, and almost no outside income or investment income, Biden was consistently ranked one of the least wealthy members of the Senate. A single father for five years, he left standing orders that he be interrupted in the Senate at any time if his sons called. In remembrance of his wife and daughter, Biden does not work on December 18, the anniversary of the accident. In 1975, Biden met his second wife Jill Tracy Jacobs, who had grown up in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, and would become a teacher in Delaware. Biden credits her with renewing his interest in both politics and life. They have one daughter together. Biden ran for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination, was considered as a strong candidate, and could become the youngest president since John F. Kennedy. He raised $1.7 million in the first quarter of 1987, more than any other candidate but his political messaging was confused due to staff rivalries and plagiarism accusations fueled by the Dukakis campaign. In 1988, Biden suffered two brain aneurysms and had surgery with a high risk of long-term impact on brain functionality. During his 2007 Presidential campaign, he failed to gain traction against the high-profile candidacies of Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton. Shortly following withdrawal from the presidential race, Obama announced that Biden would be his running mate. On November 4, 2008, Obama was elected president and Biden was elected vice president. He launched his 2020 Presidential campaign on April 25, 2019. He chose Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as his campaign headquarters. With the suspension of the campaign of Bernie Sanders on April 8, 2020, Biden became the presumptive Democratic nominee. Based on Wikipedia - free online encyclopedia.
