Summary

Atlantic Ocean (Jul. 16, 2001) Navy divers, working with archaeologists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on the Derrick Barge Wotan, recovered the steam engine belonging to the historic USS Monitor from the waters of the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, 16 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. The recovery marks a major milestone for the Monitor 2001 Expeditions and NOAAs long-range plan to recover and preserve the Civil War-era ironclad vessel. The engine will be towed to Newport News and prepared for display at the Mariners Museum in Newport News, VA. U.S. Navy Photo by Journalist 1st Class Robert Palomares. File# 010716-N-7770P-003
