The park is being cleared to allow the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to place trailers in the parks campground for use as temporary housing for families displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The Navy's involvement in the Hurricane Katrina humanitarian assistance operations is led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, in conjunction with the Department of Defense.
