description

Summary

Significance: The BRAVO Docks, B-22 to B-26, are 37 foot wide wharves that extend a total length of 2900 feet. The wharves consist of concrete deck, concrete piles, combined concrete and steel pile bulkhead, and a timber pile fender system. The BRAVO Docks are the primary berthing facilities at NAVSTA PEARL for surface units of the Pacific Fleet. The BRAVO Docks were constructed between 1937 and 1942 at a total cost of $1,859,735. The BRAVO Docks are located within the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, which was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1964. As Category 3 structures, it has been determined that the BRAVO Docks functioned as part of the Pearl Harbor Naval Base, but are only of minor importance to the historic character of the National Historic Landmark. The BRAVO Docks were designed prior to the 1941 attack by Japanese warplanes at Pearl Harbor, and were constructed during World War II. During the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the class DD-386 destroyer Bagley was berthed at the newly constructed BRAVO Dock B-22. Although Bagley was not hit by any of the Japanese war planes, Bagley shot down, or saw shot down, several Japanese torpedo planes.
