Summary

Photographs taken during a trip by John D. Whiting and G. Eric Matson to the Cappadocia region of Turkey in October and November of 1935, on the request of the National Geographic Society. Whiting, a member of the American Colony in Jerusalem, worked as a tour guide, businessman, writer, and photographer. Photographs show the locations of Gueureme (Göreme), Metchan (Maçan/Avcılar), Tchaouch In (Çavuşin), Gula Deri (Güllü Dere), Pasha Baja (Paşabağ) Valley, Zilve (Zelve), Soghanli Deri (Soğanlı Dere), and Dalarat. Depicted are the volcanic rock landscape, cave churches, homes, and other facilities; frescoes, local people, and towns. Also shown are Kayseri, Ankara, the Taurus Mountains and Beilan (Belen) in Turkey, and Byzantine ruins in Syria.
