Tityrus and Meliboeus from BL King's 24, f. 1
Summary
Miniature of the shepherds Tityrus (seated) and Meliboeus (standing), at the beginning of Virgil's Eclogues, and decorated initial 'T'(ityre) embellished with putti sitting in swags and dolphins, and a full border with all'antica decorative elements, including strings of gems, putti, swags, and garlands, and the arms and heraldic devices of Ludovico Agnelli in the lower margin. Image taken from f. 1 of Bucolica (index Bucolics, Eclogues)(ff. 1-16v); Georgica (index Georgics)(ff. 17-58), with argumenta; Aeneis (index Aeneid)(ff. 58v-244v), with argumenta and verse preface, omitting 2:567-588 ('The King's Virgil'). Written in Latin.
