description

Summary

Print shows a large, handsome campaign banner for Constitutional Union party candidates Bell and Everett. Predictably, the imagery stresses unity of the states under the Constitution. Oval bust portraits of the two candidates (Bell on the left) are encircled by two rustic frames. Sprigs of holly decorate the outside corners. Between the ovals are patriotic motifs, including (below) a seated Columbia or Liberty figure with a shield and staff with Phrygian cap. Behind her are a sheaf of grain and a plough. Around her, and joining the two oval frames, is a streamer with the words, "Liberty & Union, Now & Forever, One and Inseparable." Above Liberty appear an eagle, the Constitution, a fasces, and several flags. A similar banner was also produced by Rease for the Republican ticket (no. 1860-12).
