Persian Gulf (Dec. 30, 2004) The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) underway in the Persian Gulf. Carrier Air Wing Three (CVW-3) is embarked aboard Truman and is providing close air support and conducting intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions over Iraq. The Truman Carrier Strike Group and CVW-3 are on a regularly scheduled deployment in support of the Global War on Terrorism. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
