The Musick Master (BM 1868,0808.13219)

description

Summary

Satire on adultery, probably first issued in a magazine. An elaborately dressed lady embraces her music master who sits at a harpsichord, turning back to kiss her as she says, "My Husband pretends to sing, but his Pipe is not worth a Farthing when compar'd to yours.". Her husband opening the door, lays his hand on his sword and exclaims, "I'll have a Divorce, for after this Discovery no Harmony can ever subsist between us.". The room is finely furnished, at left, on a is a miniature painting with a small palette and brushes with which the lady has evidently been working.
