In the great agricultural stateof Ilhnois, having a population of 2,80-4,040 engaged in gainfuloccupations, there are 862,781 persons, or only thirty-one percent., as against forty-one per cent, in New Mexico, who areengaged in agricultural pursuits. THE LAND OF SUNSHINE. 57 This shows that from 1890 to 1900 the number of farms in-creased 165 per cent., the area of farm lands 550 per cent., thetotal value of farm property 60 per cent., the value of landswith their improvements 156 per cent., the value of implementsand machiner) 295 per cent., and the value of live stock 26per cent. These figures give an idea of the rapid develop-ment, and the^ are also indicative of what maj be ex-pected in the future. Another matter that is well worthj^ ofrecord here is the fact that the producing capabilities percapita of those engaged in agricultural i)ursuits have increasedamazingly. The annual value of farm products increased inthe ten years, 1890 to 1900, from nearly 82,000,000 to a littleover S10,000,000,or an increase of 400 jDer cent in the ten years,while the agricultural population has not increased 100 percent.
