(j) The incidence of the human plague has been almost entirelyconfined to certain insanitary districts of the city. Source of infection. A reference to the annexed map of South India (Map I), and Chartindicates that, as the Hon. Mr F. Bowes, C.C.S., C.M.G., Chairmanof the Plague Committee, has pointed out in his report for 1914,there can be no reasonable doubt that the infection was broughtfrom Negapatam, where a severe outbreak occurred at the end ofNovember 1913, and reached its maximum in January 1914, in whichconnection he records that large shipments of rice were received fromthat port in late December and early January. On the assumptionthat the disease was con^eyed by an infected rat concealed in a bag ofrice, the first appearance of the disease in the grain centre at Sea Streetwould be explained. ;)l?-J riiKjUi in Calo/nho
