ARABIAN GULF (Jan. 14, 2015) The guided-missile destroyer USS Mitscher (DDG 57) transits in the Arabian Gulf after defending against patrol craft USS Squall (PC 7) acting as a small boat threat during a simulated strait transit while participating in Spartan Kopis 15-01. SPARTAN KOPIS is a quarterly exercise that integrates surface and aviation units' ability to utilize established tactics, techniques and procedures against small boat threats as well as maintaining mine countermeasure defense to eliminate maritime surface threats. Mitscher is deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, strike operations in Iraq and Syria as directed, maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the region.
