The Great Harry of 1488 RMG PU0281
Summary
The Great Harry of 1488
The ‘Henri Grace Dieu’ or ‘Great Harry’ was built at Chatham Dockyard in 1488 and lost in action against the French off the Isle of Wight in 1512. In this brightly coloured lithograph she is shown on the port-broadside to full advantage against the white cliffs of the English coast, with her sails taut and her pennants clearly identifiable in the stiff breeze. Although it is clear from the inscription that William Frederick Mitchell (1845-1914) intended this as a portrait of the ‘Great Harry’ that was launched in 1488, he appears to have used as his model the more famous ‘Great Harry’ of 1514. This may be judged from the close resemblance of Mitchell’s portrait to numerous other positively identified portraits of the latter ship that are in the collection.
