description

Summary

Significance: The garden apartment complex known as The Commons of McLean was constructed in five phases between 1965 and 1973 by the Westgate Corporation, in the rapidly developing area of Tysons Corner, Virginia, in the western suburbs of Washington, DC. The project was designed by the noted Washington architect Charles M. Goodman, FAIA, who is esteemed as a pioneer of International Style modernism in the Washington region. The apartment buildings consisted of a series of rectangular blocks, separated by glass-enclosed stairways. The ten townhouses were built to six different designs, using a similar design language to that of the apartment buildings. Reflecting the then-current trend for split-level houses, the townhouses contained either five or six levels.
