BREMERTON, Wash. (Aug. 27, 2012) Rear Adm. Charles M. Gaouette, commander of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 3, casts line off a bollard to get the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) underway. John C. Stennis will be returning to the U.S. 7th and 5th Fleet areas of responsibility four months ahead of schedule in order to maintain combatant commander requirements for the presence in the region. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
