The black hat (Emma in a black hat)

description

Summary

Emma S. Bellows. The artist's wife. (Bellows) / "The Black Hat" is a much more matronly and less idealized view of Emma Bellows than the two others drawn during the same period, "Lady with a Fan" (M. 111) and "Arrangement, Emma in a Room" (M. 112). This is the first of the three "black hat" lithographs; "Anne in a Black Hat" (M. 185) and two states of "Jean in a Black Hat" (M. 187) were done by Bellows in 1923 and 1924. (Mason)
