TBM-3Q wave off USS Shangri-La 1947
Summary
A U.S. Navy Grumman TBM-3Q Avenger of attack squadron VA-6A Torpcats takes a waveoff during flight operations on board the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La (CV-38) operating off the coast of Southern California (USA), in 1947. Note the bulbous AN/APS-20 radar on the aircraft's fuselage for radio countermeasures, whereas the similar TBM-3W was used for airborne early warning. VA-6A had been established as VT-5 on 15 February 1943, and made one cruise on board Shangri-La following redesignation on 15 November 1946. The squadron was redesignated VA-55 on 16 August 1948 and finally disestablished in 1975.
