Summary

One of a set of 36 cards in a boxed set called 'Real Children'..On reverse:.Follow up to its source any little mountain stream here in Switzerland and we come to the glaciers whose slow melting goes to feed the sea. Away up here in the southern part of Canton Valais we find scattered villages like this where the running streams of ages ago have deposited the pulverised debris of their mountain channels and spread them out into little fields and meadows..Here at Saas Fee we are looking southwest towards Italy less then 20 miles away. Out of sight beyond that icy wall just before us the famous Matterhorn stands on the border line between the two countries. Lucerne is some 60 miles away directly behind us; the Bernese Alps are behind us and off at the west (right)..Even these houses, nestled in as they seem to be, at the foot of the heights, are almost 6000 feet above the level of the sea. These little folks make a few honest pennies by gathering flowers and Alpine strawberries to sell to summer visitors. They are not kept in school very long during the year, for this is a Catholic Canton, sparsely settled and the local requirements are slighter than in the neighbourhood of Berne and Zurich. They speak German. As soon as that boy is old enough, he will be sent up into the pastures every summer day to look out for the cows and the goats - they are precious treasures for these families.
