Description: Photographic documentation of Mission Specialists Pierre Thuot and Marsha Ivins working at the Dexterous End Effector (DEE) controls on the Space Shuttle Columbia's aft flight deck during STS-62. The DEE is a device on the business end of the robotic arm of the Remote Manipulator System (RMS), which enables the RMS to grapple and secure objects. The purpose of the experiment conducted during STS-62 was to improve the dexterity and alignment accuracy of the shuttle's RMS by adding an improved end effector and grapple fixture to the robotic arm.
